In the spirit of recognizing excellence, WITT wants to highlight Aydan Bas for her invaluable contributions to our app development project named KIDS FIRST. Aydan’s expertise and collaborative nature have propelled the project to new heights. Her ability to work from different perspectives, from the bigger picture to the finest details, has significantly impacted our project.
A skilled worker from Turkey, Aydan Bas arrived in Canada in October 2021 with seven years of diverse work experience as a Product Development Specialist, encompassing many roles within her title. After settling her post-immigration chores, the job hunt was next on Aydan’s bucket list, landing her at WITT, and joining our app development project as a QA Tester.
Canada’s tech industry is fortunate to have Aydan at hand: a self-starter, outgoing, and responsible individual with international experience to her credit. In the KIDS FIRST project, Aydan develops test planning and strategy, writes test cases, tracks bugs, and utilizes languages and tools such as JavaScript, Azure DevOps, and Postman of API testing. In addition, the project also provides her with the opportunity to practice automated testing using Selenium Robot Framework and Python. However, Aydan contributes to our project beyond QA testing. You could say, she happened to be the right person at the right time when she joined our team.
The KIDS FIRST project had been ongoing for several months. And when Aydan joined, it became clear that the team was struggling with a significant problem. Due to its nature, the project had a high member turnover, and decisions, business criteria, and requirements disappeared with departing members. The app development needed more solid documentation and help to communicate development progress to new team members. Recognizing a critical need within the KIDS FIRST team, Aydan took it upon herself to tackle the challenge head-on. Armed with a diverse skill set honed through years of multifaceted roles, Aydan spearheaded the development of comprehensive project documentation in Gitbook, ensuring that vital decisions and requirements were preserved for posterity.
“In Turkey, I worked in a bank in the internet and mobile banking division. When I came to Canada, I wanted to contribute positively. I felt eager, confident, and optimistic about creating a new, beautiful journey for myself!” Aydan states.
“When job interviewers here asked me about what my role in the bank would be equivalent to, I wasn’t sure what to say. I essentially had the ‘everything-role,'” Aydan jokes. “I met with clients, wrote business criteria, project managed, tested digital products, tracked and reported bugs, wrote user acceptance criteria, educated our branch staff about the digital tools, and so on. These are tasks for project managers, manual testers, instructors and client outreach”.
“It was natural to me to offer to help the KIDS FIRST team with developing the documentation. I had experience with this, so why not?”
Aydan defined business criteria for five app features, and as a result, it enhanced project clarity and improved our cross-functional team’s efficiency thanks to her opportunistic personality. With the app development running on an Agile methodology, Aydan continues to review and update the project documentation to reflect changes in the development process in addition to her usual QA Tester activities.
“I can work independently, but I prefer to have a good connection with my work team. The KIDS FIRST team members are all collaborative and engaged; we learn from each other. I can contribute much more to a good team like KIDS FIRST.”
